A Little Splash of Color

Art Club Gets a Makeover

Central Hardin’s Bruin Art Club, led by art teacher Whitney Carpenter, is making many new changes, regarding the way Art Club will be run this year.

Firstly, Art club doesn’t really have a set of strict rules to be followed, as it did in previous years. Art club used to be only for students in an art class, but now you don’t even have to be in an art class to join an art club, it’s welcome to everyone.

Art Club will now be dictated by what students want, when they want it, and how they want to do it. Carpenter said that it is mostly a students choice this year that students can just come to her with suggestions or ideas for what art projects or materials they want to experiment with. She’s also bringing back what she did a bit at the end of last year- letting students try out new materials and allowing them to be taken home if students are interested in them.

Senior secretary of the Art Club, Mercades Powell, is ecstatic about getting to use all her favorite materials.

“I’m really excited to work with water colors,” she said. “I love watercolors.”

Lakenzie Powell, senior president of Art Club, stated that she loved using all materials accept oil pastels.

“They’re too messy and they get everywhere,” she said.

Powell agreed. “I don’t like oil pastels, and chalk pastels are too powdery. They also get everywhere.”

All this seems super exciting, but what about the application for art club? In past years it was extremely short and to the point, and now it’s around three pages long. Carpenter has even required a project to be turned in with the application.

Why has she chosen to be so in depth dealing with Art Club?

“I wanted to make sure students were really invested in the club and that they knew all the upfront info,” Carpenter said. “I wanted them to show investment and skill level, and after high school, most colleges ask to see your art portfolio.”

The art submitted is really spectacular. There’s just about everything, and the members are very creative with their masterpieces. From anatomically correct hearts made from only pen and paper, to Moana themed baseball gloves, complete with Maui’s hook, the art will make your jaw drop.

Powell and L. Powell both thought the inclusion of the art project was a great idea. They think that it shows Carpenter everyone’s skill level and gives students the chance to figure out what materials they like to work with.

The Art Club will be having more of an involvement with hands on projects, such as school murals, a museum trip, and much more. Carpenter is also planning an art show, featuring students’ artwork, but that’s still in the works.
