The temperature dropping is one of the first tell tale signs of the winter season approaching. A fresh blanket of snow outside of your window, a piping hot mug of hot chocolate, and cozy Christmas pajamas all make for the perfect winter night-in. One thing, however, is missing, a lovely Christmas movie. While there are many to choose from, I believe this list encompasses everything about the holiday season and the warm feelings that make this time of year so comforting. 

10. It’s a Wonderful Life

While this film is the oldest on the list, debuting in 1946, it proves to be a holiday classic. The story follows the life and hardships of George Bailey as he navigates through the most difficult holiday season of his life. When he reaches his breaking point and makes the life altering wish to never have been born, his guardian angel appears to reveal to George how his wish drastically affects the lives of those he loves. This movie is a wonderful reminder to cherish everything we have even amongst the most difficult seasons of our lives and to hold close to the people we love.

9. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer 

Rudolph is the iconic symbol of the Christmas season and is well loved by kids from one to ninety-two. There is nothing more wholesome than the story of Rudolph and how he rose as the savior of Christmas. Rudolph is the story of overcoming adversity and staying true to oneself, a story that truly keeps spirits lifted during this last stretch of the year. 

8. Home Alone

Despite the entirety of the Home Alone franchise, the original movie proves to be the best and most memorable story. Home Alone mixes together humor through Kevin McCallister’s attempts to capture burglar’s and face the adult world with no real security, but also feelings of empathy and love as the family joins together to return home to be with Kevin. Home Alone is a unique story that continues to bond people together during the holidays. 

7. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys

This 2001 film often falls under the radar when it comes to assembling the perfect Christmas movie list, however, it is deserving of every accolade imaginable. The movie takes the traditional story of Rudolph and adds a creative element to it as Rudolph treks to the Island of Misfit Toys with his new found friends. Rudolph learns what it means to be a misfit and how he needs to stay true to himself. This underrated and underappreciated gem is one to not be forgotten when you’re crafting your perfect Christmas must-watch list. 

6. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

This animated short story, released in 1966, holds nostalgic feelings of love and warmth around this time of year. This classical version of Dr. Seuss’ iconic story is a crucial element to completing the Christmas season. The cartoon film adds simplicity to the story, this is not to dismiss the 2000 adaptation starring Jim Carey. Carey delivers a personal and comical element to the Grinch that the animation is lacking, however, the animation is too wholesome and captivating and deserves a moment in the spotlight. 

5. It’s a Spongebob Christmas!

The Spongebob Christmas special is a great insight into the holiday season down in Bikini Bottom. Our sea sponge friend navigates Christmas while his fellow underwater pals are being plagued with negativity. Spongebob, through his strong determination, saves Christmas in Bikini Bottom. This claymation cartoon is a staple for some Gen Z individuals who anticipate its debut on TV. The film also features an original soundtrack, something that makes the production special and sets it apart from its competition. 

4. Elf

This Christmas comedy is a fan favorite and should near the top of everyone’s list. Elf fills every viewer’s body with laughter and an undeniable love for the holidays. This Christmas classic will never fail to put a smile on your face and I guarantee that you’ll want to deck the halls and have the best Christmas season ever!

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas

I know that this film comes with controversy and an endless debate about whether or not it qualifies as a true Christmas movie. I’m here to tell you that it is appropriate to view this movie multiple times a year, as both a Halloween and Christmas movie, but if you’re going to pick only one occasion to take part in the viewing, let that occasion be Christmas. This movie is one of a kind and delivers such a complex plot line to the audience. As Jack Skellington goes on the hunt for his Christmas spirit, you’ll be sure to find your own after watching this lovely holiday movie. 

2. A Charlie Brown Christmas

Nothing is more classic and timeless than A Charlie Brown Christmas. This movie is heartwarming, wholesome, and absolutely filled with nostalgia. Snuggle up with a blanket and someone you love to view the ultimate Christmas movie that will leave you feeling warm and excited for everything that’s to come this holiday season. 

1. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

The only movie truly deserving of being at the very top of the list is this 1989 comedy Christmas classic. You might feel like the Griswold family when around your relatives this year, but rest assured that there is a common ground to be found, bonding together over the wittiness and comedic relief that is Clark Griswold. 

As we inch closer to Christmas, celebrate the holiday with a comforting and loveable Christmas movie. Cozy up by the fire and take pleasure in any of the great movies featured on this list, and even if our lists differ, I will not shame you for having bad taste in Christmas movies.
