Do you know the statistics about teen dating violence within the United States? According to Domestic Violence Service Inc., “ nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from an intimate partner within a single year.”
Why are teens at risk? Teens are at risk for teen dating violence (TDV) because of a combination of factors such as individual, relation, community, and social factors that can contribute to Intimate partner violence (IPV victimization). Some common factors that contribute to victimization include history of physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse.
According to Domestic Violence Service Inc. “ 1 in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend”. In line with the Domestic Violence Service Inc the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia wrote a paper and found that “ one in 4 women (22%) have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime, while 1 in 7 men (14%) have experienced the same”.
One factor that is hurting teens is 81% of parents believe teen dating violence is not an issue or admit they don’t know it’s an issue. Having a class that would teach parents about the statistics with teen dating domestic violence would make a difference toward helping teens stay away from a violent relationship

Giazzi, I thought this was an excellent piece. Some people don’t know the risk of teen dating violence (TDV), and yes, some parents need to be educated on it. Some people may think that teen dating isn’t really a big deal, but sometimes it is. A few of my friends were in this situation, so I’m glad you took an interest in this!
