As a sophomore in high school, most kids are thinking only a little about the future; much less are they thinking about their financial future. Financial literacy is an up-and-coming topic amongst the American population. Still, one Central Hardin sophomore is on a path to teach others financial literacy just as he learned it.
Sophomore Ian Mackiewicz wasn’t always a financial literacy teacher, he was once a student learning all of this too.
“I only got into this about two to three years ago. I’ve read all of these books multiple times.” Mackiewicz explains.
Mackiewicz’s sister freshman Janey Crosby has watched him from start to finish of his website-making process and the upkeep he continues every day.
“He spent a lot of time figuring out how to put a website together, reading all the books, and making all the questions,” Crosby said. “There were a lot of long nights.”
Crosby had a first-hand experience with Mackiewicz’s questions of comprehension. She was his test subject for themes, layouts, designs, web home pages, and much more.
“He would come to me and ask, ‘Is this good?’ ‘Do you think this will work?’ ‘Do you understand this?’”
Mackiewicz started from scratch when making his website and learning all the new guidelines and terms. This is a process he finished over two months in his free time.
“We take financial literacy books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Unscripted— Set for Life is one we are working on at the moment and we take quotes and questions from the books to help others better comprehend what they’re reading,” Mackiewicz said.
Ian released smarterbooks.us on Feb. 28, 2023. On his website, you can find digital audio files on all the books as well as comprehension questions for you to follow along. These comprehension PDFs serve as a way to help others break down and digest the reading.
Ian also has a particular sense of style that most students tend to notice about him. You can usually find Mackiewicz in slacks, loafers, and a dress shirt.
“People will perceive you better when you dress nice and people will listen when you speak. You also never know when an opportunity will present itself and I always want to be ready,” Mackiewicz explains.
