Homecoming week is always a memorable time when students and staff can be silly and express themselves through their attire. But the act of participating shows how one school building can really become a family.
“Every student and every teacher has talents and gifts to contribute to our school and to our culture. This week is a celebration of students and staff ‘in their season.’ We should clap for those next to us every chance we get!” PASS teacher and Pep Club sponsor Megan Williams explained. “It is especially important for Central Hardin while we are under construction and pursuing opportunities off campus that we have opportunities to come together. Our common thread is being our Bruin Best!”
“I do feel like participating makes kids more engaged with their school because, I mean, if they dress up, they’re actively wanting to go to school, to show that they dressed up,” sophomore Rhett Edlin said.
While most people only see the outer layer of the fun, there is much more that goes into the planning and execution of homecoming. Informed by student surveys completed last year, Pep Club concluded the themes that will be used this year.
“While some of these themes may seem like repeats, it is important to remember the main idea is to have as many people participating as possible,” Williams said.
Pep Club had to look for many teachers to volunteer to run the ideas and materials for games by the administration.
“We had to connect with the other campuses to make sure we can drop off materials and that they knew their students would be out for a Pep Rally (if they choose). Those working on the banners were notified a month before they were ‘due.’ Then we had to contact office staff and anyone else who would be affected by the games to make sure they were on board,” Williams said.
They also make sure to plan details about the football games, themes, and the homecoming dance.
“This time, we partnered with Ms. Thompson on a Gold Out store and are doing a Pink Out store, so our celebrations are for a cause. We partner with Ms. Batistoni, who does the Hoco dance, and Ms. York, who does the Hoco ceremony itself (and keeps Spirit Week score),” Williams said
The part about homecoming week that usually gets the most attention is the games, right? This year, there will be games to engage in not just at the pep rally, but also every day of the week. Simple activities like these can make the school week a little less stressful and more about enjoying the time there is to make memories.
CHHS Students and Staff, let’s have some fun and get creative during the week of 9/22-9/26! Who’s got that spirit?!
