The Central Times staff always welcomes input from our readers. After all, you are the audience that we serve. Articles about some of the topics suggested on our YOUR VOICE MATTERS form are in the works, but sophomore Presley Basham’s comments about AI caught our attention and warranted immediate publishing. Here’s how she answered the question, “What is an issue that teens are facing that needs more awareness?”
When I go to the Bruin Art Society it upsets me to see the sheer amount of art is made by AI. The definition of art is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.” Art is supposed to show how us HUMANS feel, it’s used to express our emotions and our desires, it’s supposed to convey meaning. When you put a prompt into an AI generator it doesn’t have a meaning. A human didn’t toil over a canvas for hours, no human sat at their desk working on designs and worrying if people will ever like it. AI art is not art.

If you wouldn’t mind explaining, what art is AI generated. I believe I’ve read almost every piece and seen the pieces that aren’t written, yet all of it felt real to me.

By AI art I mean the drawing or picture depiction, not the writing. When someone writes something, usually they want people to focus on the writing and not the art, so they slap on some AI-generated piece they made on canva. However, I find that written pieces are stronger when there is actual art in place. There are a multitude of artists in the school that would love to take commissions and it may get more people to click on your piece.
