On Aug.22, students got the opportunity to check out the various clubs that CHHS has to offer during their lunch period. While students were arriving at lunch, clubs were set up just outside of the cafeteria, showcasing what the club was about while trying to pique students’ interest. The school did Club Rush because it’s a different way to get students involved and find new outlets in school. Showcasing the clubs lets others see the overview of the club and what the club has to offer them.
Bruin Academy also had its own version of Club Rush. During their third block, students were taken to see the clubs that were set up there. Freshmen were happy to see that they could be a part of something in their school environment, considering that they are on another campus. It brings both campuses together in a different way.
“I like that idea even more,” principal Kim Case said, “because when it was in the cafeteria it was kinda dependent on students getting up and coming over and they had to create their own opportunities to go over and be informed, where at Bruin Academy and especially with them being freshmen, they could be a little intimidated to find out about it they’re just going to be taken through there and they aren’t really gonna have a choice.”
Why Clubs Are Important?
Students have always wanted to explore more when it came to school, and it shows the school that students are interested in other things not related to academics. Case was thrilled to see the students take an interest in clubs.
“I think it’s important to find your niche,” Case said. “I think it’s important to be involved. I think it’s important to be connected to something, and whether that’s clubs, or that’s an academic group, whether that’s athletics, whether that’s even a community group like Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, or something like that.”
Kayla Ernst, a senior English teacher and Beta sponsor, agreed.
“Through clubs, you can pursue interests you have and get to know other people who have similar interests. School can be difficult if all you do within these walls is academic-related, so clubs can be a great outlet.”
While clubs help you grow in school, they could even help you outside of school, like in your community and in college.
“I think people should join clubs because it’s an important part of high school, and it gets you involved with the school and your community. It can also be a great way to make friends and to put on your college applications,” senior Carter White said.
High school should be full of those important things, and clubs make it something you can remember. Club Rush was to get students to see what their year could be full of and how they can make their time at CHHS something they won’t ever forget.
Deadlines and Meetings
The deadline for all club sign-ups and to pay dues is Sept. 8. This gives students time to think about what clubs they are interested in after Club Rush. Students can join as many clubs as they want. Some clubs will have after-school meetings, which students need to think about before joining a club. They need to make sure that they can commit to the requirements and have time for the club or clubs that they want to sign up for.
The first club meeting is going to be on the 19th of September. Club meeting times will vary depending on the return of PowerHour. Some clubs also charge money for you to join the club, so students need to make sure that they pay their dues before Sept.8. During the first meeting, students will get the chance to see further into what the club can offer for them and what they can expect from that club.
Students from Bruin Academy and EC3 will be bused over and back for clubs, while JHHS will be on the regular bus schedule. The meeting will be on the third Friday of every month, other than December and May.
