Warm weather is wrapping up for this year and our next winter is very unpredictable.

Temperatures have been all over the place this fall and forecasts for the next season have been inconsistent.

There are many wives tales associated with predicting the upcoming winter.

One belief revolves around the coloration of the widely recognizable “Woolly Worms.”They say the color of these furry caterpillars determines how mild or severe the weather will be. Brown fur means mild weather is to come and black fur means the opposite.

In Elizabethtown, there have been sightings of completely black AND brown worms, so there is no telling what the weather will be.

The Annual Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk, NC holds competitions where worms are raced and the winning worm is the model for the weather forecast. According to the festival’s website, this year’s winner is approximately 55% brown and 45% black. They claim that the 13 segments of the worm represent the 13 weeks of winter.

Another common wives tale is for every foggy day in August, there will be a heavy snow in the winter season, and as you may already know, fog was common this past month.

Despite some other severe weather forecasts, the Old Farmer’s Almanac predicted a mild and wet winter for our region this year.

We will eventually find out how the weather will be, but if some of these signs are right, school make-up days will be extending past May.
