Syra Lundergan, Writer, Managing Editor
Hiiii! I'm Syra Lundergan and I take on the role of managing editor for The Central Times. I am a senior entering my second year on this wonderful staff. When I originally sent my application to our newspaper adviser, Mrs. Sherrard, I had no idea everything that this program would have in store for me. Opening myself up to this opportunity is arguably one of the best decisions I made in my high school career.
If you knew me in middle school, reading and writing were definitely not things I considered my forte. I dreaded english class, english tests, and all that fell in between. The Central Times instilled a newfound passion for literature and media that carries heavy on my heart. As of late I would consider myself an avid reader, and writer of course, some of my favorite books being Men Without Women, Credence, and The Inheritance Games series.
I am so excited to work on expanding our school presence and broadening the student outreach this year! Outside of newspaper, I am also involved with cross country, track and field, Pep Club, and I co-op in the main office here at CHHS. With that, in my free time I really enjoy running, swimming, hiking, and everything that comes with being outdoors.
One of my goals this year is to challenge my writing abilities and indulge in topics like pop culture, mental health, event coverage, and more. I hope to present you all with positive, informative, and sincere content year round. Go Bruins!
Hanna Grass, Writer, Co-Editor-in-Chief
Hey everyone! My name is Hanna Grass and this will be my third year on The Central Times staff. I am a senior this 2023-24 school year and have taken on the role of Co-Editor-In-Chief with the hope to inspire, teach, and uplift those a part of the Central Hardin community.
Throughout my adolescence, I have found solace in writing. Whether it be creating stories, articles, or poetry, literature has always played a big role in my life. Books such as A Little Life, The Secret History, Normal People, and The Goldfinch have helped this love flourish in their descriptive and unique nature. Novels that touch upon emotional topics or intertwine a heart-pounding mystery hold a special place in my heart, these four being a few of many. That all being said, reading and writing are not my only loves. Watching movies, mindlessly doodling, and piecing together new playlists are also regular pastimes for me, especially when the weather isn't tolerable. Noah Kahan, Frank Ocean, Hozier, Bon Iver, Mac Demarco, and Mac Miller are handful of the artists who rule my Spotify. Whether I am relaxing in my room, doing homework, or driving around with friends, you can almost always catch me with a tune playing in the background.
On days when the weather has blessed me with blue skies and sun, I will likely be spending time outside with friends or family. As an active person and athlete on Central's track and cross country teams, I love to run. Getting my miles in is a key aspect to my daily routine, and on off-days, I love to bike, hike, or go kayaking. My dad has worked in the National Park Service all my life, so learning to love nature in all its forms was vital in my upbringing. I was born in Arizona, but have lived in Montana, Colorado, Florida, and of course, Kentucky. Given my past, I like to consider myself pretty well-traveled. Although, I still yearn to traverse foreign areas like Ireland or Norway to learn more about my family heritage.
In the upcoming school year, I look forward to exploring the inner workings of human psychology, reviewing literary works, highlighting the talented students of CHHS, and breaking the boundaries of what a student publication normally covers. As a returning member of the staff, I understand how much of an impact students and teachers have on what types of content we publish. I encourage you to submit an opinion to our site, or even get in touch with the staff personally. My email is always open and I would love to hear your thoughts! Coming full circle, I have big hopes and dreams for this year as a journalist and am so eager to see where the next year of content takes us.
Emily Tester, Writer, Social Media Manager
Hello! My name is Emily Tester and I am the managing editor of The Central Times for the 2024-2025 school year. I am a junior and this is my second year on the staff. Not only did I have the chance to join the staff my sophomore year but I get to continue to be a part of it. I'm excited to see what's in store for the upcoming months!
Being on the staff last year opened my eyes to the beauty of journalism. Growing up, I had always liked English class. I loved to read (and still do) and make up stories and journal about anything and everything. When I entered middle school I started honors English class. In my eighth grade year, I discovered my talent and enjoyment in writing.
Entering freshman year, I made a promise to myself that I would put my writing skills to good use and joined The Central Times. This decision has brought many lights to my life. Not only do I get to write, but I've met so many great people along the way. It wouldn't have been the same without the 2023-2024 Central Time staff.
I am also active in FBLA where I am the Region 3 Reporter, Beta Club, Pep Club, and have been working since I turned 15 years old. I love to be active and hope to join and do many more things this year.
I hope you enjoy my articles as much as I enjoy writing them!
Lindy Barnes, Editor-in-Chief
Hey, I’m Lindy, and I’m so excited to return to The Central Times Staff! It has been a joy to get to know my fellow classmates and inform the community of the pressing issues at our school. In the summer of 2023, I attended GSA for creative writing, which grew my appreciation for the craft of words. This past summer, I spent five weeks at Murray State University in the Governor’s Scholars Program where I studied historical analysis. During the school year, I’m involved in the Executive Council, Beta Club, Cross Country, and Academic Team. I have a passion for learning, especially when it comes to classic literature, art, history, and math. Some of my favorite hobbies are reading, spending time with my two guinea pigs, and playing quiz bowl. I know Central Hardin will accomplish much in the 2024-25 school year. My wish is that I’ll be able to capture a fraction of the tenacity, individuality, and potential of every person here.
Alayna Edblom, Writer, Entertainment Section Editor
Hi everyone! I'm Alayna Edblom and I'm a Senior this year! This is my second year with the CHHS Times Staff and I'm really looking forward to what is to come. After my experience with the newspaper last year, I've grown very fond of the class and its attributes. I enjoy writing and bringing attention to the fascinating events happening around us. To say a few things about myself, I love music, reading, playing video games, and am a huge movie fanatic. Some of my favorite movies are Pride and Prejudice, When Harry Met Sally, and 10 Things I Hate About You. Can you tell I'm a sucker for romance? Anyway, I'm very excited about the stories we'll write and I can't wait for the amazing things we'll do this year, I hope you can't either! Thanks for stopping by!
Cici Hicks, Writer
Hello! I'm Cici Hicks, a sophomore and it's my second year on The Central Times staff. I was fortunate to join the staff as a freshman, which only further ignited my passion for writing, something I've always wanted to pursue.
I am thankful for the support and guidance from the 2023-2024 staff who have helped me become the writer I am today.
Aside from writing, I enjoy listening to and playing music, as well as watching films. Music is a huge and favorite part of my life, whether I'm listening to my favorite bands like The Beatles, The Smashing Pumpkins, and The Smiths, or playing my guitar, which I picked up about three years ago.
Representing the voices of my fellow students at Central is something that I'm incredibly passionate about, and I'm genuinely excited to continue doing so as a part of the staff this year!
Megan Puckett, Writer, Opinion Section Editor
Hi! My name is Megan Puckett. I am a senior at Central Hardin. This is my first year on the newspaper staff and I can't wait to share all the amazing things in our community with you. I hope to inspire a bit of positivity in every aspect of my writing.
Writing has always been a big part of my life. I have always used writing as a way to soothe my emotions and channel them in a positive way. I am also a major music fan. I am constantly listening to new genres and styles. I, of course, have a few favorites. Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Ray, and Hozier are just a couple of the big names that make up my playlists. I also love reading. I can constantly be found spending all of my free time with a book in my hands. I love the fiction genre most of all.
On cool autumn days, I can be found hiking or having a picnic with friends. I love to drive around and listen to music full blast with the windows down. I've always lived in Kentucky and love to see all of the state.
I can't wait to spend this year sharing and learning everyone's experiences. I love this community and want to make sure that everyone can be well informed and have their own ideas and theory!
Alice Tomasovic, Writer
Hi everyone ! I’m Alice, an exchange student from Belgium. I joined The Central Times staff this trimester because I love writing and I want to improve my English. One thing to know about me is that I love sports. I played soccer and I’m on the lacrosse team. Also, my biggest passion is reading. I love being able to live thousands of lives when I read a book. I chose to be a member of the newspaper not to miss any opportunities to meet new people and to enjoy my life here as much as I can. I’m really excited about it and I hope to live up to your expectations. Don’t miss my new articles to follow!
Matthew Mills, Writer
Hi, I'm Matthew Mills and this is my first year writing for "The Central Times." I plan to write articles that express the students of Central Hardin High School. I joined the publication in hopes of improving both my journalistic and writing skills and also to become more integrated within the school community. I also plan on videoing events and clubs to be posted on the Central Times Instagram page, @chhstimes.
In the future, I plan to go to college for a degree in broadcast journalism and begin a career within the field living in New York or South Carolina. Spreading accurate and trustworthy information utilizing media and new age methods of journalism, whether it be through video or a post on Instagram, has been a dream of mine. In an era filled with misinformation, it can make it hard to know whether a source is able to be trusted without doing extensive research. In the future, I plan to create a multimedia news source that is unbiased and you know can be trusted 100% of the time.
In my free time I enjoy going on jogs, photography and playing video games. You can see my photography on my Instagram page, @krylior. Some games I enjoy and would recommend to you are Call of Duty (parental guidance is advised), Undertale, Remnant From the Ashes and Cookie Run: Kingdom.
I'm honored to be a journalist for the Central Times and look forward to help writing the amazing publications created by our staff.
Ashley Borders, Writer
Hey guys! I'm Ashley, a sophomore, and this is my first year on the Central Times staff. I'm super excited to be able to utilize and enhance my writing skills within my school. I love writing, reading, and music. Writing has always been a passion for me and I plan to become an author or journalist in the future, so this is a great opportunity for me. I want to bring the best, latest news to you all and make sure you're in the know.
Adaya Duvall, Writer
Hi:) My name is Adaya Duvall. I'm a senior and this is my first year on the Central Times. I hope this year to write, inspire, and have a lot of fun! I really enjoy writing and I've always thought about it as a way to speak my mind. I joined the Central Times as a way to do that and branch out a little bit from only writing essays for English class. I can't wait to write about the interesting things happening in and around our school. This is my last year of high school so I hope to make this one the best one yet!
Brooklyn Suarez, Writer
Hello! I'm Brooklyn Suarez and I'm a senior here at CHHS. This will be my first year on The Central Times staff. I'm very excited to dive deeper into our Central Hardin culture and expand my knowledge of what it means to be a writer. Since I can remember, I've always been reading or writing. I guess I have to hand it to my mom on that one. Every night when I was young she would read me multiple stories, and every night she made me fall deeper in love with literature. I probably wouldn't be in this position right now if it weren't for her. Thanks mom!
Outside of The Central Times, I'm involved in FCCLA as VP of Public Relations and FCA. I also co-op at G.C. Burkhead and assist with preschool and special education rooms. When I'm not at school, I'm usually spending time with friends and family or shopping chronically online for more books.
I'm so blessed to have the opportunity to work with such amazing staff members. I hope to inspire and/or enlighten some of you all through my work!
Audrey Johnson, Social Media Manager/Assistant Editor
Hello! My name is Audrey Johnson and I'm a Senior this year. This is my second year on the Central Times staff. I've always had a passion for writing ever since elementary school. I look back on my earlier articles and think I've come so far with my writing. I never really thought about joining the newspaper, even though I enjoyed writing and loved reading about pop culture in the news. This might sound silly but, the TV show "Gilmore Girls" inspired me to join the Times. It was inspiring how with one article you can make a difference in your school or community. But unlike "Gilmore Girls" I wanted some constructive criticism on my work so I become better at it.
Besides writing, I love to read, listen to music, watch movies, etc. I'm a regional officer and President of FCCLA, member of the Beta Club, President Educators Rising, NSHSS, and participated in the Youth Solute program. The thing I love the most about being on the staff is the people. We all have a similar goal in mind and that is having a voice and presence within our school. I want to present a non-bias and informational place for all people to enjoy and learn from. After I graduate, I hope to major in Family and Consumer Sciences education and Journalism. With the knowledge I have gained, my experiences here will go farther than a high school classroom! Go Bruins!
Lily Tingle, Writer
Hey y’all, I’m Lily Tingle! I’m a senior and this is my first year on The Central Times staff. I could not be more excited to be able to share my voice through my stories and articles.
Aside from the newspaper, I’m involved in many different clubs and extracurriculars around our school. My main source of time is my involvement with the Central Hardin Band. I’ve marched with the marching bruins for the past 6 years. I played a different role in the band each year. I marched flute for a season and a half before joining front ensemble, then I was in drumline, but found my true passion in being drum major the last two seasons. I became head drum major for my senior season and it was the greatest honor ever.
Along with marching band, my involvement continues in symphonic band, pep band, and flute ensemble. I’m also manager of the wrestling team and a part of our Educators Rising branch.
Apart from my extracurriculars, I spend most of my time listening to music and creating playlists to grow my Spotify. My top artists include 5 Seconds of Summer, Taylor Swift, Jack Harlow, Harry Styles, and The 1975. My Spotify is full of playlists, 44 to be exact, of every type of music you could imagine. If you ever need a playlist for something, find my Spotify account and give it a follow!
I’m very excited to grow my love for writing during my time on The Central Times staff. I love this school and our community so I’m very excited to see the impact the paper has on the school and students, but from the inside. I can’t wait to share my voice with y’all! Go Bruins :)
