I am not an expert on everything Gilmore Girls related. I do not know every obscure quote from the show (“Oy with the poodles already!”), and this is my first time watching the show. However, I love Gilmore Girls, and I do feel like I have enough knowledge of the show to create a definitive ranking of the characters, at least the characters that I have been introduced to, since I am currently watching season 3.  I was inspired by the definitive ranking of the characters by Maggie Phelps from our publication (go check it out). Although I agree with most of the rankings, I feel like there should be a revision. A second definitive ranking. This list is completely definitive, and you cannot debate with it. 

1. Lorelai- I love Lorelai as much as she loves coffee. Lorelai was more than just a rebellious teenager who wanted to be independent. Her character shows the struggle of societal expectations, resilience, independence, and how one can make their dream life come true despite it all. Despite her background, she wasn’t content because of her parents, and it wasn’t the life she wanted. The decision to leave them and make a life of her own with Rory at the age of 16 shows just how great a character she is.
2.  Paris- Paris is my favorite character because of her passion, work ethic, and competitiveness. She will do  anything she can to get into her dream college, Harvard, from building homes to leading study groups at the age of 10. She is passionate about everything she sets her mind to, is always up for competition (she usually wins), and has a persistent work ethic. Her personality isn’t the most sociable and friendly, which is why she doesn’t have many friends, but she values the friendships she does have, such as with Rory.
3. Rory- “Who cares if I’m pretty if I fail my finals?” When Rory was starting at Chilton, she was struggling with her schoolwork and grades. But after her dedication and lots of study sessions, she was soon in the top 3% of the highest GPAs in her class, and yet her Friday nights consist of doing laundry, reading, watching TV, and eating junk food with her mom. She loves reading classic books, is the vice president of Chilton’s student government, and was accepted into not only Harvard but also Yale and Princeton. She’s caring, kind, and so intelligent. Rory is an amazing character.
4. Luke- Luke will say, “It’s no big deal,” after building an intricately carved wooden huppah, a canopy used in Jewish wedding ceremonies, just for Lorelai’s wedding day. He is the definition of the phrase: if he wanted to, he would. Luke is such a great friend to Lorelai, doing her favors like helping out with her home and teaching her to fish; the list goes on. Their relationship dynamic is nothing short of perfect. Whenever they’re both in a scene, you can’t help but see their chemistry. From the first episode, I could tell that they were meant for each other.
5. Sookie- Sookie is a ray of sunshine after a rainy day. She is a talented chef, a perfectionist, supportive, emphatic, caring, smart, and trustworthy. I just wish I could have her famous dishes at the Independence Inn.
6. Emily and Richard- Emily and Richard always have good intentions, but sometimes are not honest about them, so they frequently emotionally manipulate Rory and Lorelai. They want the absolute best for Lorelai and Rory and love them, even though sometimes that isn’t clear.
7. Kirk- Kirk is the most active citizen of Stars Hollow. He has so many jobs at different places in town (what does his resume look like?) and he helps out the town any way he can. He was a hockey game announcer, worked at the local beauty supply, produced a film, worked at the grocery store, the list goes on. Kirk’s quirkiness, passion,imagination, and uniqueness make him an unforgettable character and a core part of the show.
8. Lane- Lane is a character I can relate to, and I don’t think that she’s selfish in her friendship with Rory. It’s understandable that she wanted to spend more time with her and that she was mad at Rory for spending too much time with Dean. Through it all, Lane has been a great friend to Rory.
9. Dean- Dean, when he was dating Rory, was a great boyfriend, even though they didn’t share many interests. He made her a car and even dared to go to a Friday night dinner with the Gilmore family! I think it was understandable that he was frustrated and even angry at Rory sometimes because of her and Jess. Dean was wrong to break up with Rory the way he did, but it was sad to see how he slowly realized that he was losing Rory to Jess. Dean is definitely underrated.
10. Jackson- Jackson is the perfect partner for Sookie because of their individual uniqueness; they both have a passion for cooking, and though that is a source of argument for them, it is what ultimately brought them together. What really defines him is when Sookie was pregnant, and he was overly protective of her. Although he can be a bit odd and questionable sometimes, he is truly a great character.
11. Jess- I do not like Jess that much. Jess is a complex character, which is why his personality is the way it is: He was sent away from his mom and father to Stars Hollow against his will, and he has a troubled relationship with his family. It makes him easily annoyed, angry, gloomy, and he pushes people away from him, even Rory. Jess is an unlikeable character, but he has potential to be better.
12. Max- Max Medina was the perfect partner for Lorelai: understanding, kind, and so different from Lorelai. He was everything she needed in her life in theory, but he wasn’t the right person.
13. Christopher- Christopher was always leaving Lorelai and Rory when he made promises to be better, be present in their lives, and be the father he was meant to be. But he never did. His past with Lorelai definitely impacted this and made him inconsistent and feel incomplete. It’s sad to see the character that he’s become.
