Overview
President Trump has declared, “The Gaza war is over.” This announcement follows the signing of a peace agreement by several key countries in the Middle East. The plan is titled The Trump Declaration for Enduring Peace and Prosperity. According to Trump, both Israel and Hamas have endorsed the deal. While the agreement impacts much of the Middle East, its primary focus is the Gaza Strip. The Gaza Strip is a region located along the Mediterranean coast and includes Gaza City. Although adjacent to Israel, it is not officially part of the country.
Timeline
- September 29, 2025: U.S. President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu unveiled the peace plan.
- October 3, 2025: Hamas agreed to release all Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip. In return, Israel committed to releasing Palestinian prisoners and Gaza detainees.
- October 13, 2025: The peace agreement was formally signed by all parties involved in the conflict.
The Plan
The peace deal consists of two main components:
- Part A: Political Framework This section outlines the administrative aspects of the agreement, including enforcement mechanisms and governance of the Gaza Strip.
- Part B: Economic Framework This section addresses the financial aspects of the plan, including funding sources and economic development strategies.
Is Peace Achievable?
Some observers have expressed skepticism about the durability of the agreement, predicting it may unravel quickly. Comparisons have been drawn to the Abraham Accords of the early 2020s. The United Nations has stated it will not enforce the terms of the deal, leaving enforcement responsibilities to the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt for now. While peace in the Middle East has long been pursued, it remains elusive. The question persists: will lasting peace ever be possible?
